The 9th summer of Lekòl Dete!!
This course will focus on the ninth annual Lekòl Dete!
Lekòl Dete is summer school in Haitian Creole. What better way to promote lasting peace and break down social and cultural barriers between children living as restaveks (i.e., indentured servitude) and children who are free, than to bring them together for four weeks of summer fun and learning? Initiated in 2011 by Amanda Mundt through grants from the Davis Projects for Peace and the Restavek Freedom Foundation, Lekòl Dete has proven to be an excellent way to cross social boundaries for both the children and their teachers. The greater principle of Lekòl Dete is that people we see as “others” are not really so different and that we are all united. More specifically, we help the teachers learn to think and teach more critically through educational games they can share with their students. Education in Haiti is usually a process of rote lectures and repetition; Lekòl Dete is structured to promote curiosity, questions, creativity and critical thinking. Lekòl Dete educational activities foster mutual respect and peace while enhancing critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

OfC Scholarship Program
Thanks to the generosity of some anonymous donors, OfC has established a Scholarship Program! These friends of OfC are committed to furthering OfC’s mission by encouraging participation of students exhibiting outstanding leadership skills and commitment to sustainable development, regardless of their financial means. Scholarships, which will be applied to Course Tuition/Program Fees, will be awarded on the basis of merit as well as financial need. For its 2018 programs, OfC is awarding a limited number of scholarships of $250 to defray course tuition/program fees (program fees are typically $400-500, exclusive of travel and expenses). Please consider supporting this program by designating your tax-deductible donation to the “OfC Scholarship Fund.”
